“Leaders at public accounting firms have been dealing with a talent shortage for quite some time now. The combination of intense tax seasons, high cost of college, and the difficulty of the CPA exam have driven students away from the profession. Thankfully, firms are taking steps to address these problems in several ways. One of the biggest shifts has been the rethinking of how careers develop inside firms, with more flexibility around progression and a stronger focus on practical skills. There is more emphasis on firm leaders coaching up their staff for client work and setting realistic performance expectations.

While tax season will always be a stressful time of year for those in public accounting, many firms are trying to reduce the workload crunch through technology and alternative staffing arrangements. None of these changes solve the talent shortage by themselves, but they reflect an evolution of understanding that retaining people depends on the day-to-day experience of the job. Firms that can offer clearer paths forward, more manageable workloads, and strong culture are better positioned to compete for talent over the long term.”

(Cherry Hill, NJ) Managing Shareholder Ren Cicalese, CPA, PFS, CGMA was recently a featured guest on USA Global TV® & Radio’s online series A Head for Business. The March 26, 2026 episode, titled “21st Century Creative Accounting: What Businesses Miss (And Why It Matters),” explored how modern businesses navigate financial reporting, risk management, and the evolving role of advisory firms.

During the episode, Ren shared his insights on creative accounting, emphasizing the importance of understanding the nuances of tax laws, distinguishing between compliance work and advisory services, and the impact of strategic financial guidance on long-term business success. He illustrated these points with real-world examples from his decades of experience, including cases where low-cost providers failed to capture valuable deductions—costing clients significant sums—and how Alloy Silverstein’s proactive advisory approach helps businesses avoid these pitfalls.

Associate Partner Reynold Cicalese III, CPA, MST was featured in NJBiz with the article titled, “Looming tax law sunset spurs worries in business community.”

Other CPAs are also skeptical. “Federal government trends have been less-than-predictable these days,” noted Ren Cicalese III, associate partner at Alloy Silverstein Accountants and Advisors in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. “I believe there will be some kind of extension of the tax cuts at some point this year but getting there will involve solving many technical hurdles. Tax legislation typically comes from the House, and with a very slim Republican majority, Trump tax cut extension supporters must be unified to advance any legislation.”

That could be a challenge for Republicans in states like New Jersey, which have relatively high property and other taxes, added Cicalese. “Some House Republicans are saying they may not sign off on an extension of the TCJA provisions unless the SALT cap is substantially raised or even eliminated. So, Congress will have a tightrope walk to please everyone. I think we’ll end up with some kind of TCJA extension, but some specific provisions may be watered down.”

The uncertainty is spurring some of his clients to hit “pause” on their machinery and equipment purchasing, he said. “The prospect of losing out on bonus depreciation is definitely a pain point. Some of our manufacturing clients who invested in capital improvements during the first year of the TCJA got a nice break. Consider that a business organized as a ‘C’ Corporation in the flat 21% federal tax bracket, which invested $100,000 in M&E. They saved $21,000 of federal tax liability in the year of acquisition. If they had to wait, say, five years to recapture that, they may do a stutter step — thinking twice about the purchase. Right now, we’re advising many clients to wait a few months before making any significant capital improvements to see how this all shakes out in Congress, if they’re able to do so.”

But some businesses can’t wait that long. “One of our New Jersey-based clients is a small-tools manufacturer,” Cicalese detailed. “The assets that create their tools wear down fairly quickly, so there’s a constant cycle of replacement — they cannot defer their purchases while Congress wrangles over tax bills.”

In a post-pandemic world, remote work continues to be a mainstay in some form or another for employees. Unfortunately, with the increased remote workforce, there is also an increase in corporate vulnerabilities for perpetrators to exploit. These vulnerabilities often make a company’s complex security setup less effective.

Another tax season is officially underway, and the editors at South Jersey Biz magazine spoke to several experienced professionals to get their thoughts on the 2024 tax season for the 2023 tax year. Associate Partner Ren Cicalese III, CPA, MST offered his thoughts in the article titled, “Words of Wisdom: Navigating Tax Season.”

“Without a doubt: There’s always something new and every tax season has its own challenges,” says Reynold P. Cicalese III, associate partner at Alloy Silverstein Accountants and Advisers and the immediate past president of the Southwest Jersey chapter of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants.

“It’s really difficult to say what those challenges are going to be each year until you really get into it. Over the last few years, there have been issues with the IRS specifically where, since COVID, they’ve been really slow at getting things processed. … It’s gotten a little bit better—they’ve gotten caught up on that a little bit—but there’s always something new.”

[…]

Are there certain developments you’re especially keeping an eye on this tax season for your clients?
RC: We do a lot of tax projections here at our firm, and one thing I can tell you that a lot of people—both business and individuals—are probably going to be surprised about come April is that if you didn’t manage your cash correctly in the business or individually, you’re going to have a higher amount of interest due than prior years just because interest rates are higher. As a quick example, I had a client who had a business account that was a money-market account, so it was earning some high-yield interest, and their interest from 2022 to 2023 tripled. When that happens, because your income is higher, you’re going to have higher tax than the previous year. So if you didn’t plan for that properly in your business or your personal life, you may have a surprise tax bill when your tax return is finalized because you didn’t expect that specific type of income.

Q: What aspect of the cannabis industry does your firm specialize in (compliance, growth, distribution, etc.)?
Having an accounting firm that understands the impact of how you set up your entity, navigating 280E and the challenges of setting up payroll in an industry that has not yet received federal approval will make a big difference in the success of your new business.
