Bone Marrow Drive Information

By partnering with The Icla da Silva Foundation and Be The Match, Alloy Silverstein invites you to take a few minutes of your day to register to be a Bone Marrow Donor.

Every three minutes, one person is diagnosed with a blood cancer. Every 10 minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer. That’s more than six people each hour, or 148 people each day. Patients are searching for a cure. Seventy percent of all patients who need a transplant don’t have a fully matched donor in their family. However, not enough potential donors are registered: A patient’s likelihood of finding a matching donor on the Be The Match Registry is estimated to range from 19-80%, depending on ethnic background. Because of donors like you, more patients will be able to receive a life-saving transplant. By hosting a Bone Marrow Drive, we are helping grow the registry to give more patients a fighting chance.

  • What is a live bone marrow drive? The drive allows you to register your contact information and tissue type to a national registry. It’s not a marrow donation; you don’t actually donate until you are a match for a patient.
  • What do I have to do? A volunteer will help you create an account and then with just a simple swipe of a cotton swab in your cheek, your tissue type will be added to the registry.
  • Are there eligibility guidelines? Be The Match is looking for donors between the ages of 18-44. If you are between the ages of 45 and 60, a $100 tax-deductible contribution may be required to cover the cost of joining. You must meet the health guidelines and be willing to donate to any patient in need.
  • What are my chances of being a donor? 1 in 300 will be selected as the best possible donor for a patient. About 1 in 430 members will actually donate. If you are chosen as the best match for a patient, the patient’s doctor will request that you donate either bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC).
  • Why is the bone marrow registry database important? When you join the Be The Match Registry®, you become part of every patient’s search for a bone marrow donor. Thousands of patients with blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, sickle cell, and other life-threatening diseases need a bone marrow transplant. You could be the one to save a life.
