Is there an age limit on claiming my child as a dependent? It’s important to remember that there were no personal exemptions for dependents through the tax year 2025. It still matters, however, whether or not someone would qualify as your dependent for other tax issues like the child tax credit. The age limits apply to the child’s age on December 31st, so it really doesn’t matter when their birthday is. It just matters how old they are on the last day of the year. Your child needs to be under age or your child can be under age if they’re a full time student for at least five months of the year. If the child is totally disabled, then there is no age limit. One additional interesting requirement is that the child must be younger than either the taxpayer or the spouse. I’m sure this provision does not disqualify too many dependents, but it is an interesting fact. If you have other questions about dependents, please
