The application period has ended. Check back in the Fall semester for Externship Day 2019 details.

Our next Externship Day will take place in January 2019. Our program is a 4-hour session in which you will hear resume and interview tips from our Managing Shareholder, participate in a round-table luncheon that will discuss the CPA exam and public accounting career tips, plus tour our Cherry Hill office.

Alloy Silverstein welcomes accounting, finance, and business majors from all four levels of undergrad – freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior – to apply for our annual Externship Day. If you’re pursuing your bachelor’s degree in accounting, and don’t know what career options are available for you, OR if you already know public accounting is the route for you, Externship Day gives you a behind the scenes look at what you can expect in a real, regional firm. There are some things books just can’t teach you!

What is Externship Day?

In 2009, Alloy Silverstein began offering an “Externship Day” event to local college and university students. Since we can’t welcome all students as interns, an externship was the next best thing. Our Externship program is a 4-hour session that covers topics including:

  • Résumé building
  • Interview tips
  • Internship advice and best practices
  • CPA exam preparation and expectations
  • Life during tax season
  • Public versus private accounting and other career opportunities
  • Networking
  • Career advancement
  • The future of public accounting
  • Real career lessons and experiences

Externship Day is an interactive event, so the more questions the attendees ask, the more answers they get, and also dictates the direction of the content for the day. Due to capacity constraints, we can only welcome 20 students in each session.

Our interns helped mold the program to really tell students and prospective accountants what it is you should expect in the working world. Each topic is discussed by real Alloy Silverstein team members, ranging from our Managing Shareholder to Supervisor, Accountants, and even our Interns. We invite you to speak up at the roundtable luncheon, where the more informal atmosphere will help everyone loosen up!

Ultimately, Externship Day gives students a competitive advantage in the job market through interaction with our established professionals. Students will have the opportunity to explore the field of public accounting, learn how to jump-start their career and connect with fellow students.

  • How do I get invited to Externship Day?
If you’ve found this webpage and you’re in the Philadelphia region, go ahead and apply! Each fall, we reach out to many local colleges and universities and ask the career department, business school dean, accounting department chair, school accounting society or accounting professors to forward the information to their students. You can also like us on Facebook or follow us on LinkedIn and Twitter for upcoming Externship Day announcements.
  • Who should apply?
Freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior accounting, finance, or business majors who live a drivable distance to our Cherry Hill office should consider submitting an application.
  • Why do I have to apply?
Since we host Externship Day in our own conference rooms (so you can tour an actual office atmosphere and have as much face time with as many professionals as possible), we are limited to accepting only 20 students for each Externship Day session. Each year we typically receive up to 125 applicants, so the application process helps us welcome in the best of the best. We wish we could take you all!
  • Is this like a shadow program?
Unfortunately no – due to client confidentiality we cannot allow you to shadow our CPAs or check out any real client work. The purpose of Externship Day is to get all the information possible on how to succeed on an interview, tips on passing the CPA exam, and how to be the best possible entry level accountant as you begin your professional career. Our speakers have been in your shoes before, and we want to share what we wish someone else told us in the beginning of our accounting careers.
  • Do I have to bring anything?
We recommend you bring a fresh copy of your resume. We’ll supply Alloy pens and handouts!
  • What happens after Externship Day?
Your Externship Day attendance can be a nice little line item on your resume to give you a competitive advantage in a crowded job market. We also ask that you follow our social media accounts and connect with the day’s speakers on LinkedIn so you can be aware of any upcoming career opportunities.
